Question 4: Is an FAA pilot certificate with a type rating a sufficient qualification to operate a ferry or test flight?
Answer 4: No.

FAR 61.58 requires that the pilot-in-command of a ferry or evaluation flight in a large turbojet airplane have completed a simulator "Proficiency Check" within 12 calendar months under an FAA Approved Part 142 curriculum for the type to be operated. FAR 61.57 also requires certain currency events be maintained to operate, with additional requirements if operations are to take place at night or in instrument conditions. In addition, FAR 61.55 sets forth the currency requirements for second-in-command, who must also have a certification for annual recurrent training in each airplane type operated as second-in-command. Conformance with these and other relevant requirements is necessary in order to demonstrate the qualifications and currency of the flight crew, and their legality to operate the flight. It is fundamental to the validity of insurance coverages in the event of a loss.
